Optical Coherence Tomography
Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT, is a non-invasive, non-contact scan of different parts of the eye including the optic nerve and macula at the back of the eye, or the cornea at the front of the eye. It provides us with highly detailed images and information on the thickness of these important structures which cannot be gained in other ways. It greatly assists in diagnosing and monitoring of glaucoma and macular diseases such as age related macular degeneration, and allows us to detect subtle changes over time.
There is a fee for this scan as it is not currently covered by Medicare. Some private health funds may rebate a portion of the fee under their ancillary cover, so please contact your health fund to find out if this applies.
